Drivers Side Power Lock Servo Installation

Scope:
This document describes how to install a power lock servo on the driver's side of a 2nd generation RX7. This is intended for the purpose of implementing a keyless entry system on a car not previously equipped.

This should work for any 2nd gen RX7 but I can not guarantee that the servo will clear your door panels or power windows. All I can say is there was plenty of clearance in my car.

Vehicle:
1986 RX7 (base, manual windows)

Why I did this modification:
I am installing an alarm on my RX7, and I wanted to be able to utilize the alarms keyless entry circuit. I used a passenger's side lock servo because that is what I had laying around. These servos are also more abundant because many RX7's came with only passenger side lock servos.

Parts needed:
1 Passengers side power lock servo from a 2nd generation RX7
2 standard automotive relays
2 10mm bolts (~1/2 length)
2 10mm nuts
Length of 20-22 gauge wire.

Procedure:
1. Bend the upper servo-mounting bracket so it is relatively flat compared to the remainder of the bracket.

2. To the lower right of the door handle, there is a space just big enough for the servo. Screw a bolt through the rear servo-mounting hole and place it on the existing hole in the door.

3. Notch the marked area so the front of the servo can be mounted to the door.

4. Secure the servo to the door with 10mm nuts and bolts.

5. Affix the servo armature to the door lock rod. Make sure the arm is in the correct position such that the servo can lock and unlock the door.

(A am fortunate enough to have access to a welder, so this step was easy. If you don't have a welder, you can use JB Weld; or you could rig something up. Be creative.)
